Finding Good Receptionist Jobs

You may not hear a lot about receptionist jobs these days, but they are still out there. Some companies have found a way to use an automated system to replace having an actual person answering all incoming calls, but other companies still see great value on having a personal touch to all phone calls, and also in having a person greet customers and clients when they come into their building. If you want to have a decent job that is more important than you may think, you may want to see what you can find in this area.

Secretaries are no more. They are now called administrative assistants. Some in receptionist jobs will be called the same, but their main job is reception for both phones and people coming into a physical location. A smaller, local company (that is not a retail outlet) may have receptionist jobs open once in a while. Those are great places to start. Larger companies in your area may also have them, but these are going to be harder to find. Receptionist have a large turnover rate because they are let go or promoted quickly if they are valuable. With larger companies, however, a good one is hard to find and they pay them well to keep them. Start small and see where you go.

You have to know more than how to answer a phone system if you want to apply for receptionist jobs these days. In fact, most companies do not care if you know how to use their complicated phone system, as they will teach you how to do that on your own. However, you do have to know how to use a computer and how to run most of the common software that businesses use these days. Those wanting to find receptionist jobs may have a leg up if they know these things, or if they find a business course they can take that will teach them what they need to know.

A good candidate for receptionist jobs also knows a lot about how to talk to people. They know how to make anyone feel welcome whether over the phone or in person, and they also know how to keep their cool if a customer becomes irate when calling in. If you are easily flustered or get really upset when someone yells, receptionist jobs may not be the best idea for you. If you can keep calm and remember that a screaming person on the phone is rarely mad at you, though they may seem to be, and that someone else has to handle it, you can do okay in this line of work.

Where can you find the best receptionist jobs? That depends on where you live. You can go around to local companies to see if someone is hiring, or scan your local classifies to look for leads. If you have a state job bank in your town, go there to see if you can find anything through them. You can also use the most reliable source for new job postings by going online to the various job sites that list jobs in your local area. There you can see what the job is, what you are expected to know, and how to apply for the job.

High Paying Jobs That Don’t Require That You Come in Wearing a Tie and Holding a College Degree

It’s a pretty straightforward proposition – if you skip college, you’re headed for a life of little respect, destitution, perhaps working three jobs to maintain your level of poverty. That is how it is, isn’t it? Well, that may be true in some cases, but in all the ones we list here down below, nothing could be farther from the truth. There are in fact, plenty of people out there who look at how young graaduates come out of college without any real life skills, and believe the whole higher education system is an elaborate scam. Whichever way your thinking lies, this much you should be aware of – if you do decide to skip college, you do stand a fairly good chance of getting any one of these high-paying jobs.

It kind of sounds like that Seinfeld episode where George quits his job and then hangs around Seinfeld trying to discuss how you don’t need any special qualifications to be a projectionist at the movie theater. “It’s a union thing” is the conclusion they come to, and they reason that George probably couldn’t qualify. It isn’t a union thing if you want to be a private detective for instance. What is it that you need in terms of qualifications that you need to be a gumshoe? Most people feel that their backwards-and-forwards knowledge of Law and Order has to be great place to start. Perhaps not. A private detective has to be a master of people. He has to have great deductive and critical thinking; and knowledge of how the mind works; he (or she) needs to be fearless, and possess a complete understanding of old laws that would apply. Just remember, deduction is what Sherlock Holmes did. And he was no slouch. But these are qualities you can gain through self-education, through reading, and through the school of hard knocks. What does it pay? Upwards of $50,000 a year.

Photography used to be an expensive hobby. For one thing, you had to have your own darkroom at home, and film stock that really set you back. That’s no longer the case though. Photography is completely done on digital equipment now, and there are going to be far more many people who try their hand at professional photography. The only thing you need is to invest in a magazine subscription to learn the art (or a library ticket) and of course, a quality camera. And while you’re at it, learning the ropes, you can still shoot birthday parties, music videos and bar mitzvahs to fund your passion. How much does it pay to be a freelance photog. who sets your own hours? A cool $50,000 a year.

But enough of the high-paying jobs without college degrees that actual need technical knowledge. How about something for the rest of us – like it used to be in times gone by? Try for instance being a fishing boat supervisor. Working on a factory trawler, a floating processor or a fishing boat, is dangerous work. You need to go out to sea when the waters don’t seem all that calm. But here’s the cool part – you get to be physical, they pay you $50,000 a year, and you only work half the year. The rest of the time, you get to use all that money you made.

When you look at a bus driver, does that look like a job that would keep him or her in luxury? As a matter of fact, $40,000 a year isn’t really chump change. Being a Transit Authority employee driving a bus, pays well. It pays well because they put you in charge of a load of passengers. You need to be alert and you need to have a good sense of how to maneuver something that’s large.

High-paying jobs such as these are great news for people who want to work with their hands, people who like to go out and do their own thing in the world, and not necessarily answer to someone, and wear a tie. The world really is a richer place for the fact that these jobs exist still.
