High Paying Jobs That Don’t Require That You Come in Wearing a Tie and Holding a College Degree

It’s a pretty straightforward proposition – if you skip college, you’re headed for a life of little respect, destitution, perhaps working three jobs to maintain your level of poverty. That is how it is, isn’t it? Well, that may be true in some cases, but in all the ones we list here down below, nothing could be farther from the truth. There are in fact, plenty of people out there who look at how young graaduates come out of college without any real life skills, and believe the whole higher education system is an elaborate scam. Whichever way your thinking lies, this much you should be aware of – if you do decide to skip college, you do stand a fairly good chance of getting any one of these high-paying jobs.

It kind of sounds like that Seinfeld episode where George quits his job and then hangs around Seinfeld trying to discuss how you don’t need any special qualifications to be a projectionist at the movie theater. “It’s a union thing” is the conclusion they come to, and they reason that George probably couldn’t qualify. It isn’t a union thing if you want to be a private detective for instance. What is it that you need in terms of qualifications that you need to be a gumshoe? Most people feel that their backwards-and-forwards knowledge of Law and Order has to be great place to start. Perhaps not. A private detective has to be a master of people. He has to have great deductive and critical thinking; and knowledge of how the mind works; he (or she) needs to be fearless, and possess a complete understanding of old laws that would apply. Just remember, deduction is what Sherlock Holmes did. And he was no slouch. But these are qualities you can gain through self-education, through reading, and through the school of hard knocks. What does it pay? Upwards of $50,000 a year.

Photography used to be an expensive hobby. For one thing, you had to have your own darkroom at home, and film stock that really set you back. That’s no longer the case though. Photography is completely done on digital equipment now, and there are going to be far more many people who try their hand at professional photography. The only thing you need is to invest in a magazine subscription to learn the art (or a library ticket) and of course, a quality camera. And while you’re at it, learning the ropes, you can still shoot birthday parties, music videos and bar mitzvahs to fund your passion. How much does it pay to be a freelance photog. who sets your own hours? A cool $50,000 a year.

But enough of the high-paying jobs without college degrees that actual need technical knowledge. How about something for the rest of us – like it used to be in times gone by? Try for instance being a fishing boat supervisor. Working on a factory trawler, a floating processor or a fishing boat, is dangerous work. You need to go out to sea when the waters don’t seem all that calm. But here’s the cool part – you get to be physical, they pay you $50,000 a year, and you only work half the year. The rest of the time, you get to use all that money you made.

When you look at a bus driver, does that look like a job that would keep him or her in luxury? As a matter of fact, $40,000 a year isn’t really chump change. Being a Transit Authority employee driving a bus, pays well. It pays well because they put you in charge of a load of passengers. You need to be alert and you need to have a good sense of how to maneuver something that’s large.

High-paying jobs such as these are great news for people who want to work with their hands, people who like to go out and do their own thing in the world, and not necessarily answer to someone, and wear a tie. The world really is a richer place for the fact that these jobs exist still.
